Working with Difference: Leveraging Creative Tensions
Turn your collaboration’s differences into powerful drivers of transformational change.
About This Opportunity
What it is: In today’s world, fostering genuine collaboration is more than just bringing people together; it’s about building authentic alignment and trust among diverse people. Creating innovative solutions requires more than just getting everyone to agree on the surface. Real ownership and meaningful alignment from all parties are crucial, especially when emotions are high and the stakes are even higher. In "Leveraging Creative Tensions," you'll gain hands-on experience and learn proven methods for recognizing, mapping, and harnessing the diverse values and perspectives within your team. This course turns conflict and polarization into genuine alignment and productive collaboration.
This course is perfect for leaders who anticipate needing to manage deeply ingrained differences and concerns among various stakeholder groups. If you have people who don’t see eye to eye or even outright dislike each other, this toolkit will help you to honor these differences and move a group towards genuine collaboration.

Working with Difference: Leveraging Creative Tensions
What You’ll Gain
To drive complex change across cultural, sectoral, and functional boundaries, fostering genuine alignment—not just superficial compliance—is essential. This involves tapping into the diverse values and experiences of all stakeholders to create a holistic understanding of the challenges and opportunities at hand. You'll learn to help others see and appreciate the wisdom in differing perspectives, transforming potential discord into shared understanding. Additionally, you'll develop the ability to anticipate and address conflicts early by understanding the broader context, ensuring smoother and more effective collaboration.
You will leave this course with enhanced skills in:
Understanding Stakeholder Motivations: Recognize the underlying values driving stakeholders' motivations, fears, and behaviors
Mapping Value Dynamics: Reveal the sources of unproductive conflict and polarization through values mapping
Distinguishing Issues: Clearly distinguish between problems to solve and polarities to leverage
Helping Groups Get Unstuck: Facilitate groups in moving through conflict and polarization
Reframing Resistance: Use the polarity lens to reframe fear and resistance in a positive and constructive light
Fostering Values-Level Collaboration: Promote collaboration at the level of values, resulting in more resilient and sustainable solutions
Practical Applications
You’ll learn how to apply a polarities thinking lens and mapping tools to better navigate human dynamics and also the strategic choices before your collaboration. This practice supports you and your team in embracing a “both/and” approach to change-making.
